Gigs 2016

 Friday 2 September 2016 - Inkwell  Leeds

Thursday 15 September 2016 - Verve Bar  Merrion Street  Central Leeds

We gladly took up our invitation to return to the Tequila Bar@Verve for our second playing at this central Leeds venue. With our Latin and Blues influences to the fore the band got the audience grooving. Watch out Verve we will be back!!

Thursday 14 July 2016 - ADP Tour Week at The Chemic Tavern  Woodhouse  Leeds

We again opened the show and set the bar high at the open mic night marking the arrival of James Cauty’s (ex KLF) Aftermath Dissolution Project. The Blacksocks, featuring Pete’s 1950’s Gibson Gold Top, created a soundscape befitting the occasion.

The Blacksocks celebrated their return to Instrumental@Inkwell (after an absence of almost a year and the nights 4th Aniversary. (We played on the second occasion the night was run). The welcoming vibe of the Inkwell inspired the band to give one of their best performances! Highlights were the audience singing along to our ‘Take the Skinheads Bowling’ and the band resurrecting an old favourite in John Martyn’s ‘Jelly Roll’ when asked for an encore! The whole evening had a warm vibe as the Inkwell community enjoyed and supported the band. Anne and Emma dancing to ‘High Heeled Sneakers’ created a special memory. After helping to clear up and getting plenty of positive feedback from audience members The Blacksocks and the Inkwell were left buzzing.

Saturday 10 September 2016 - Friends of Farm and Forest at Swillington Organic Farm  Leeds

It was expected that following the success of the 5th Festival in 2015 at Swillington Organic Farm that the 2016 happening would be bigger and better. However the farm was affected by floods during the winter and this meant that the 2016 event took on a different form. The farm has an events and education unit - This Green Moon - in its woodland and this is where this years event was held.

Poetry from Antonio and Ci Stanworth, songs and stories from Tony Wilson, crafts for kids and local beer and wine setup The Blacksocks to do their thing. As dusk fell the assembled audience were taken, candle lit, into the forest where the magical Woodland Creatures wove musical magic with their sparkling tunes. Back on stage our old friends A Pocketful O’nowt entertained with music and mayhem as only they can. Then (Captain) Chris Scarlett brought the evening to a close next to the embers of the campfire with a collection of tunes expertly delivered. Good stuff indeed!

On the eve of Dave’s 50 th birthday The Blacksocks played a few of their original songs at the open mic night. Before our set the audience sang a rousing happy birthday, then one shrewd punter was heard to say - He doesn’t look a day over 60…

Sunday 10 January 2016 - Fraca at Leeds Polish Club  Chapeltown Road  Chapel Allerton  Leeds

We returned to Fraca (Folk Roots Acoustic Chapel Allerton) at iits new venue. Our short acoustic set featured ‘Take Us’ being played live for the first time and was received enthusiastically by an audience which contained several fellow musicians and friends.  The evening was\made complete when Dave won the raffle!

Thursday 21 January 2016 - Cloth Cat Open Mic Night at The Chemic Tavern  Woodhouse  Leeds

The Band returned to one of their favourite stomping grounds at The Chemic. Our set of ‘Take Us’, ‘Manana’ and ‘Lagrimas Negras’ went down a treat. ‘Lagrimas Negras’ translates as Black Tears which cheered up the punters on a bleak night in Woodhouse. Well, maybe not, but the Cuban style groove certainly got the toes tapping. Salut.

Thursday 24 November 2016 - Cloth Cat Open Mic Night at The Chemic Tavern  Woodhouse  Leeds

Featured Artist Slot at the Chemic’s Cloth Cat Open Mic Night is des res thanks to the ever growing reputation of the night; the friendly and knowledgeable punters and first rate real ale on offer. For these reasons The Blacksocks waited patiently to play again in that privileged spot at our spiritual home. We opened by paraphrasing the late Ian Dury to give debut to our new theme tune ‘Socks n Drugs n Rock n Roll’ which raised smiles and got feet tapping on a bitterly cold day. Later in the set we played our version of ‘First we take Manhattan’ in tribute to a hero, Leonard Cohen, and to a friend, Anne Isherwood (wife of our drummer Deryk) both of whom died recently. The Chemic’s famous tankard of generosity was passed around at the end of the set as is tradition. The band donated this collection to Cloth Cat by way of thanks for the opportunities they have given the band and in support of the work they do in promoting mental health through music.

Saturday 19 March 2016 - Transforming with Poetry Special Event at Inkwell  Leeds

The Band were delighted to play at this Special Event in solidarity with the oppressed people of the Western Sahara whose lands have been occupied by Morocco since 1975. Visiting poet Hamza Lakhal represented the Western Sahara people and his passionate poetry read in Arabic and English made hairs stand up on the back of the necks of his audience.

Thursday 23 June 2016 - Verve Bar  Merrion Street  Central Leeds

This was our debut at Verve bar in Leeds City Centre. Our performance was enthusiastically received by the audience packed in the atmospheric Tequila bar. Our original compositions were particularly well received and our style was said to have complimented the Latin American themed decor. Audience members compared our sound to Californian hip hop(?!) and The Doors.

At the end of our set we were immediately invited to return in a few weeks. With compliments like that how can we refuse !!
